Mount Everest Everest

Mount Everest

Everest, Mount, mountain peak in the Himalayas of southern Asia, considered the highest mountain in the world.

Mount Everest is situated at the edge of the Tibetan Plateau (Qing Zang Gaoyuan), on the border between Nepal and Tibet.
The mountain was named for Sir George Everest, a British military engineer who served as surveyor general of India from 1829 to 1843, during which time the peak was surveyed. Everest was the first person to record the location and height of the mountain, then known as Peak XV. Most Nepali people refer to the mountain as Sagarmatha, meaning "Forehead in the Sky." Speakers of Tibetan languages, including the Sherpa people of northern Nepal, refer to the mountain as Chomolungma, Tibetan for "Goddess Mother of the World."
In 1954, after various figures had been rejected, the height of Mount Everest was determined as 8848 m (29,028 ft). The mountain's actual height, and the claim that Everest is the highest mountain in the world, have been disputed. But additional surveys completed in the early 1990s continued to support evidence that Everest is the highest mountain in the world. In fact, the mountain is rising a few millimeters each year due to geological forces. Global Positioning Technology (GPS) has been installed on Mount Everest for the purpose of detecting slight rates of geological uplift.

The Megafishes

Megafish

The Megafishes Project represents the first worldwide attempt to document and protect the planet's freshwater giants. The unprecedented use of freshwater has led to the declining populations of many aquatic species. Perhaps nowhere is this pattern more apparent than among the largest freshwater fish. Globally, a pattern has emerged; these big fish are disappearing.

African Elephant

African Elephant

African elephants are the largest land animals on Earth. They are slightly larger than their Asian cousins and can be identified by their larger ears that look somewhat like the continent of
Africa. (Asian elephants have smaller, rounded ears.)

Jupiter With Moons

Overall Winner: "Jupiter With Moons"

An amazingly clear portrait of the king of our solar system, Jupiter, earned top honors in the 2011 Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest.
U.K. resident Damien Peach snapped the frame from the Caribbean island of Barbados, capturing not only the planet's intricate cloud bands but also the disks of two of its largest moons, Ganymede (upper right) and Io. The shot won first place in the "Our Solar System"
category, as well as the title of overall winner.

Giant Panda

Giant Panda

The giant panda has an insatiable appetite for bamboo. A typical animal eats half the day—a full 12 out of every 24 hours—and relieves itself dozens of times a day. It takes 28 pounds (12.5 kilograms) of bamboo to satisfy a giant panda's daily dietary needs, and it hungrily plucks the stalks with elongated wrist bones that function rather like thumbs. Pandas will sometimes eat birds or rodents as well.

The giant squid

Giant Squid

The giant squid remains largely a mystery to scientists despite being the biggest invertebrate on Earth. The largest of these elusive giants ever found measured 59 feet (18 meters) in length and weighed nearly a ton (900 kilograms).

Antarctica Vinson Massif

Vinson Massif, Antarctica

Vinson Massif is the highest mountain in Antarctica. It sits 16,050 feet above sea level 750 miles from the South Pole. It was first discovered in 1958 by U.S. Navy flyers operating out of Byrd Station and was named after Carl Vinson, a U.S. congressman who supported funding research in Antarctica. Mountaineers attempting to see Vinson Massiff must deal with temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit and strong winds.

Coyne was born in 1897 in Iowa, USA. His 1918 World War I draft card listed his height as 8 feet. His Guinness book of records entry states that he was refused entry to the war due to his height. At the time of his death it was possible that he had reached the height of 8 foot 4 inches. He died in 1921 of hardening of the liver and a glandular condition. He is buried in his place of birth in a specially made extra-large coffin.

The biggest ship

The biggest ship of the world

Have you ever wondered which is the biggest ship on earth? The boats that tipically reach huge dimensions are Cruising ships, Battleships, Aircraft Carriers and Tankers. The biggest of all (and with a big gap from the others) is the Supertanker " Knock Nevis" (formerly known as Seawise Giant, Happy Giant, and Jahre Viking) with its 458.45 m (1,504 ft) in length and 68.9 m (226 ft) in width. It has a deadweight of 564,763 tonnes and a summer displacement of 647,955 t when laden with nearly 650,000 m³ (4.1 million barrels) of petroleum. The ship has a draft of 24.6 m (81 feet) when fully loaded, which makes it impossible for the ship to navigate even the English Channel, let alone man-made canals at Suez and Panama. It has also a long and complicated history, It was built between 1979 and 1981, damaged during the Iran-Iraq War, and refloated in 1991, but is now used as an immobile offshore platform for the oil industry.
